Imagine sharing a small classroom with 30 other primary school children, sharing a school bench with 5 other children instead of only one. Or worse, you will have to sit on the floor the whole morning during lessons because most benches are broken. This is the daily reality for thousands of school going children in the community of Murira, Burundi. As a result many children suffer back pain and have difficulties to concentrate during the lessons. How can we support these children to go to school in dignity so they can improve their learning ability?
Aim
Since 2017 we work with school teachers, parent associations and local carpenters in Murira to help improve conditions for 1,600 primary school children. We want primary schools to be a place where children can attend school in dignity. Our joint focus is to make sure that every child in Murira has a proper seat in their classroom, so they are better able to concentrate, improve their learning ability, and will have less health complaints. While the focus is currently on this primary need, we are also exploring and organizing other ways to improve the primary school experience in Murira. For example, we also organized a school drawing competition for children to design a health message and reproduce the winning designs on murals for display at the school compound.
